The Quality Ice Cream store of 1 year sold out to them a month ago. The sign is up and they are hiring and they are going strong on the store.

Nice!! We attempted to get ice cream from that place but the line (of people standing) was out of hand (mid June). That said, there was a drive through, and it was totally empty of cars. We thought about pulling the car up to it, but figured we must be missing something as why would so many people stand in line while NO cars were in the drive through. We ultimately decided not to stand in line or get glared at in the drive through, so we went to McDonalds across the street for shakes. WHAT A MISTAKE THAT WAS. Took 30 minutes to get shakes.....30 MINUTES. The shakes were awful too. Pure sugar syrup or whatever they use to augment the ice cream. Never again! But, it's all moot now as i'll gladly pull up to the Taco bell and order 15 delicious tacos!!

I bet I get something from McD's about 3 times a week for many many years and I have never had a shake there, I just assumed I would not like it. I will be going to the Taco Bell for sure Taco Bell in Kitty Hawk (56)

Every 4 or 5 years I get nostalgic and go to a Taco Bell. Then I spend the next 2 days in discomfort and swearing I'll never return.

It's been about 17 years or so for me. I went for a year after moving to NC and then stopped. However, in college it was a staple. A bean burrito was $0.29 and a cheesy bean burrito was $0.39. I could eat like a king for less than $2.

Same. There was a burger chain out west called Carls Jr. On Saturdays their cheeseburgers were $0.29. I'd buy 20 and keep them in the fridge. Nuke them for 45 seconds and they were good as new. I'm embarrassed about the amount of burritos and burgers I ate back then. Kept me fed for a couple years. I tell my wife if I ever have a heart attack she knows exactly why.

A correction, two explanations, and a recommendation . . .

The Taco Bell is not in Kitty Hawk. It's in Southern Shores.

As you come over the Wright Memorial Bridge, everything to the left is Southern Shores. The road and everything to the right is Kitty Hawk. Actually, the area immediately to the left after the Bridge is Martin's Point, an unincorporated area of Dare County, belonging to neither town. But the Marketplace Shopping Center (commonly known as the Food Lion shopping center) is in Southern Shores.

The previous owner of what will soon be Taco Bell cited an inability to find workers to keep his ice cream shop open. That may or may not be true, but the fact is that the restaurant business in general is suffering all over the Outer Banks for a lack of labor. A big part of this is that the foreign students who usually come to work during the summer couldn't get in this year unless they were here before the pandemic took off.

Coming or going from the Bridge, my choice for a burger would always be Wendy's to avoid the problems others have mentioned.

1) We all know it’s Southern Shores, we call it Kitty Hawk anyway. 2) The ice cream shop had plenty of help. The owner was worried about another bridge shutdown and Taco Bell was putting on the pressure so they decided to sell. The quick turnaround of the store shows it was in the works for quite some time. 3) Mimi at Wendy’s runs the tightest ship on the beach, Wendy’s will always be my first choice.

LOL! So how do you feel about the folks south of Kill Devil Hills who think the entire Outer Banks is called "Nags Head"?

I agree that it was a quick turnaround. My suspicion was that the ice cream business just wasn't profitable, at least in that location. The rents for that shopping center aren't inexpensive, and the transactions at an ice cream store are comparatively low. Since March, places like Walmart and Home Depot pay staff comparatively well, so I'm thinking the people who wanted to work didn't take jobs at minimum wage. High turnover?

But I certainly haven't seen the store's books, so I'm just guessing.

By the way, Southern Shores uses the Kitty Hawk Zip Code. Okay, the Outer Banks has a huge Identity Crisis. Yes 50 years ago many people used Nags Head as destination for the area KH, KDH and NH. KDH was never mentioned. How about the use of Cape Hatteras to describe the whole of Hatteras Island. Now I dont even want to approach the BIG ARGUMENT, what is the Southern boundary of the OUTER BANKS. To an Oldtimer it's Ocracoke.

If I knew you guys needed a taco bell that bad I would of sent you one. There is five of them within a 3 mile radius of me. Taco Bell in Kitty Hawk (152)

2003 was the last time I've been to one. I think the price of fast food has approached mid-teer restaurants. You can go to a lot of other places for a few dollars more.

Wendy's does have the formula for serving drive thru customers at a quick pace.

Back about 5 years ago the Wendy's in KDH (the only one at the time) had an owner many refered to as the Burger Nazi after the soup nazi on TV because he made the drive thru run like magic. You hardly had to stop and it went like clockwork. he sold it and it slowed down until about a year ago when the owner built the new one in Kitty Hawk and it moves like the old Wendy's in KDH which also rocks now too. The McD's in Manteo should charge taxes on the people in line since they are there so long.

Okay I admit that my Outer Banks fast food is limited to one or two times a month. Wont go to BK or KH or Manteo McDs. My OBX go to are NH TBell or KDH Wendys. However my Number One GO TO PLACE whenever I go up to VA or past Grandy is Hardees, by far the best in my book.

By the way, Southern Shores uses the Kitty Hawk Zip Code.

As does the Town of Duck.
Yes 50 years ago many people used Nags Head as destination for the area KH, KDH and NH.

Back in the 1880s, when (wealthy) vacationers from the mainland came to the Outer Banks for the summer, they came across the Sound by boat, bringing their servants and some possessions to include furniture. All the accommodations were on the Sound in what is now Nags Head. If they wanted to go to the ocean for the day, they either walked across the bank or hired a cart to take them. None of the other towns really existed.

By the 1920s, the interest in being on the Ocean had increased to the point that the wealthy vacationers were building houses on the ocean. If you're interested, Millionaires' Row still exists in Nags Head on the beach road. Old, big traditional houses. Many of these are open during the various off-season or season-shoulder home tours.

I'm doing the historical dates from memory, so someone please correct me if you fact check them and they aren't right. There's a great description of what was in Kitty Hawk in the early days in McCullough's book, The Wright Brothers.

what is the Southern boundary of the OUTER BANKS. To an Oldtimer it's Ocracoke.

There's no real dispute because it depends on what you mean by boundary. Also, Dare County ends at Cape Hatteras, and Ocracoke is in Hyde County, confusing things somewhat. Ocracoke is clearly the most southern OCCUPIED part of the Outer Banks, but there are banks no longer occupied south of that.

Do a search for Portsmouth Island. It can be visited.
